Michael Peter McMinn, 72 of Saunderstown, passed away Saturday August 6, 2016 surrounded by his family and the love of his life, Jane Newcombe.
Born in New Haven, CT, he was a son of the late Joseph E. and Shirley E. (McElrath) McMinn.
In his early years, Michael worked at Sikorsky Aircraft before becoming a successful Executive Buyer at Edward Malley Co. in New Haven CT. In his late twenties, Michael moved to Rhode Island and did what later would become his single most defining characteristic. By following his heart, he attended Oklahoma Farriers College where he developed his talents as a Master Farrier and began a successful equine career that would span over 40 years.
Thought of as a "horse whisperer" by his clients he worked closely with veterinarians and was known for being able to find solutions to even the most challenging problems. Michael was a highly intelligent and super engaging man with a smile to light up a room, charisma to keep one enthralled in conversation and wit to make you laugh.
In addition to being a Master Farrier, Michael also loved teaching, aviation, and was a technology enthusiast. One of his favorite past times was relaxing at the Charlestown Breachway.
Although Michael took great pride in his career, his true and overwhelming passion was his family. In addition to his love, he leaves behind his six children, Amanda McMinn, Elizabeth Sullivan, Michaela McMinn, Megan Pereria, Jessica Barco and Michael McMinn; a brother, Joseph McMinn; a sister, Susan McMinn; three son-in-laws, Kelly, Bradford and Jonathan and eight grandchildren; Tyler, William, Regan, Ethan, Emerson, Landon, Madison and Camden.
To Michael, family was everything and he reveled in the fact that he had helped create such a loving and caring one. His strength and support for his family never wavered, he always considered them to be his greatest achievement. His charisma and charm will continue to shine through in his loving family.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 27th2016 at 11am in South Ferry Church, 170 South Ferry Road, Narragansett. Visitation will be held at 10am prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation will be appreciated.
