Joan
Schlegel
Additon
June 22, 1932 - December 31, 2020
Resided in Wickford, Rhode Island
With heartfelt sadness, we announce that on December 31, 2020, Joan Schlegel Additon, 88, passed peacefully at home with her children at her side. In leaving this life, she was reunited with the love of her life, Lawrence C. Additon, to whom she was married for 66 years.
Joan, a registered nurse, was a graduate of Truesdale School of Nursing. She worked in the maternity unit at South County Hospital where she led a meaningful career helping bring new lives into this world.
A lifelong resident of Wickford, home was the touchstone where Joan nurtured family, flowers and dogs. She and her husband were avid gardeners and exceptional dahlia growers, always eager to offer assistance, wisdom and bouquets to all who asked. She and her husband were valued members of the Rhode Island Dahlia Society. Later in life, love of flowers inspired her to open Wickford Gardens, a small home-based dahlia and floral design business.
Joan was a skilled contract bridge player in her younger years and achieved the rank of Life Master. Hoping to play just a few more times, she made a last-ditch effort to teach her children the game. Much to her chagrin, she conceded they were, in fact, hopelessly incapable.
She will be lovingly remembered by her family as the heart of family gatherings, pool parties, celebrations, holidays and especially remembered for her love of all things Christmas.
She is survived by her children, Martha Kauffman, wife of the late Jorey Kauffman, Robin Myers and her husband Ken, Bethany Additon and her husband Andrew Barber, and Mark Additon; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Kurt Alan Schlegel and his wife Ann of Del Mar, California.
A private funeral service and burial in the family lot of Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery, North Kingstown, will be held at a later date due to COVID-19 restrictions.
In Joan’s memory, brighten someone’s day with a bouquet of flowers or send a memorial contribution to a charity of your choice.
