George F. “Bud” Leonhardt, Jr., 87, of Chepachet passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his children, grandchildren and sister, Tuesday, July 24, 2018. He was the husband of the late Irene L. (Cooney) Leonhardt for 60 years before her passing in 2013. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late George F. and Margaret (Costello) Leonhardt. He was the father of Frank Ricci and his wife Barbie, George “Bud” Leonhardt III and his wife Patty, Jo-Ann Jalette and her husband Paul, Barbara Guilbault and her husband Peter, Jay Leonhardt and his wife Debra, and his late infant twins Mary and Joseph. He was the brother of Margaret Donovan-Fritz and the late Dorothy Hacker. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He enjoyed his later years with his companion Doris Jacquart of Chepachet. Mr. Leonhardt was a field tech engineer for the Algonquin Gas Transmission Co., for 30 years before retiring in 1988. He graduated from Gorton High School in Warwick in 1950 and was proud to have lettered in football and baseball. He was an Airman 1st class Navy Veteran of the Korean War, flying off the USS Wasp. Bud was a member of the Glocester Zoning Board for 20 years and the Planning Board for 3 years. He was a member of the Chepachet Fire District’s executive board for the past 17 years. He received the Glocester Citizens Award in September of 2001. He drove the Glocester van for Meals on Wheels for 7 years and loved working at the voting polls for over 30 years. He was a founding member of St. Eugene’s Parish since 1956, serving as Trustee for the past 25 years, Parish Finance Council, Eucharistic Minister, greeter and usher. He was a member of St. Eugene’s Council Knights of Columbus since 1961. Bud was a founding Scout Master of Glocester Troop 44, BSA. He was still currently active in scouting, participating and mentoring in camp events and Eagle Boards. He served over 20 years with the Glocester Little League as a coach and umpire and was a former coach for preteen football. Bud was honored three weeks ago to serve as Grand Marshall for the Glocester Ancients & Horribles Fourth of July Parade.
His funeral will be held Monday, July 30, 2018 at 8:30am from the TUCKER-QUINN Funeral Home, 643 Putnam Pike, Greenville, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in St. Eugene Church, 1247 Putnam Pike, Chepachet. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Pascoag. Visitation Sunday, July 29, 2018 from 3-7pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to Boy Scout Troop 44 c/o Myles Beltram, Scoutmaster, 35 Reservoir Rd.
