Ernest C. Battey, Jr. Obituary

Battey, Ernest C. Jr. "Big E", 64, passed away Thursday, February 11, 2016. He was the beloved husband of Jane M. (Rathbun) Olney-Battey and son of the late Ernest C., Sr. and Annie (Galligan) Battey. Ernie was a correctional officer with the state of RI for 32 years and had received his Associate Degree in criminal justice from CCRI. He was an All -American track star at Warwick Veterans Memorial High and ran for University of Texas at El Paso on a full scholarship. An avid softball player, he played in various leagues in RI. He was a life member and past president of the Little Rhody Boat Club, a member Tri City Elks Lodge #14, and the East Greenwich Fire Association. He was a published poet. Ernie also enjoyed listening to music and was a member of the southern NE record club. He was the beloved father of Brent Battey and his wife Maureen, and Matthew Olney and his wife Georgia; brother of Debra Holdridge and her husband Tom. He also leaves his beloved granddog Zeus, who he affectionately nicknamed "Sprinkles."


A visitation will be held Sunday, February 14, 2016 from 1-4 PM with a memorial service to follow at 4 PM in the Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Chapel, 2435 Warwick Avenue, Warwick. Burial will be private.
