Albert “Al” J. Smith, 85 of Jamestown, passed away Friday, April 10, 2020. He was the beloved husband of Frances (Fuller) Smith for 65 years. Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts he was a son of the late Charles and Mary (Pallatroni) Smith.
As a young man, Al worked on the Jamestown Ferry and served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves. He was employed by Touraine Paint of Everett, MA and Brian Supply of Waltham, MA as a salesman for many years. Al was the owner of Pitchers Liquors in Jamestown, known today as Grapes & Gourmet. He was a Democratic Chairman and served on the Bridge Commission and the Jamestown School Committee. As the owner of Pitcher’s Liquors, Al sponsored a Jamestown men’s softball team from 1975-1984. He also coached Jamestown Little league.
Besides his wife Frances, Al is survived by his four loving children, Laurie Smith (Billy Fontaine) of Coventry, Kevin Smith (wife, Judith) of Narragansett, Robert Smith (wife, Lori) of Saunderstown, and Kristen Tingley (husband, Kevin) of North Kingstown; a brother, Charles Smith of Manassas, VA; eleven grandchildren, Ryan Smith, Christopher Smith, Geoffrey Smith, Jaymes Smith, Jaclyn Smith, Ashley Smith, Garik Smith, Jordan Smith, Alec Enos, Colin Enos, and Jared Enos; and a great-granddaughter, Arianna Smith. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Al was predeceased by his sister, Charlotte Richardson and brother, James Smith.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am on Saturday, September 19, 2020 in St. Mark Church, 60 Narragansett Ave., Jamestown with a celebration of life to follow at 1 pm in Twin Willows, 865 Boston Neck Rd., Narragansett. His burial will be private.
Due to current safety protocols, church seating is limited. Please wear face coverings.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Jamestown EMS Division, 50 Narragansett Ave., Jamestown, RI 02835, Attn: Treasurer, will be appreciated.
